The Prevent Cancer Super ColonTM at Seaport Village in San Diego, CA. |
The 2010 Tour
The 2010 National Super Colon Tour kicked off in San Diego on March 3, 2010. The exhibit was up all day in a beautiful park near Seaport Village. We greeted approximately 1,000 visitors who took tours through the exhibit, collected materials on colorectal cancer, and learned about symptoms, risk factors, and screening options. The day in San Diego starts a month of activity celebrating National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month – and a yearlong initiative to spread the word about prevention: Colorectal Cancer is Preventable, Treatable, and Beatable!
The Amgen tour of the Prevent Cancer Super ColonTM may be seen in these four locations this Spring:
- Amgen Campus, Thousand Oaks, CA – March 17, 2010
- Spring Training with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Tucson, AZ – March 19, 2010
- Dempsey Cancer Center, Auburn, ME – April 15, 2010
- Monahan Center, Cornell, New York, NY – June 7, 2010

History of the National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month & the Super Colon Tour
National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month began in 2000 when the Prevent Cancer Foundation, the American society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition and the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable joined forces to have March official named as the month to recognize colorectal cancer awareness. The first official celebration of the month was in 2000. Over 57 other collaborating organizations helped with this work and joined in the celebration.
The Prevent Cancer Foundation looked for something unique to honor March as CRC Awareness Month and extend the celebration of colorectal cancer awareness all year long. They settled on the idea of an educational exhibit call the Prevent Cancer Super ColonTM, which would tour the country, educating the public about colorectal cancer. The tours began in 2003. The tour grew into the National Colorectal Cancer Campaign.
Mission & Vision of the National Colorectal Cancer Campaign
The goal of the tour and the campaign is to increase awareness that colorectal cancer is largely preventable, treatable, and beatable – during the month of March, National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and throughout the year.
The vision is creating a world in which colorectal cancer is no longer a life threatening disease because:
- Individuals take action to get screened
- Barriers to screening are removed, especially lack of access to services
- All key stakeholders commit to decreasing colorectal cancer rates
The 2009 Tour
The National Colorectal Cancer Campaign (NCRCC) kicked off in New York City, Friday, February 27, 2009 in Times Square. It was an amazing debut with over 1,500 visitors.
Throughout 2009 the Super Colon traveled across the nation reaching out to people in small towns and big cities. It stopped at Indian Reservations, health fairs, hospitals, cancer centers and was visited by people from every walk of life; take a look at the cities we visited in 2009.
The Campaign also included gifting CRC buddy bracelets, working with CRC partners, and a commitment to keep colorectal cancer: preventable, treatable, and beatable.
