Twenty-five years a catalyst in cancer prevention

Twenty-five years ago, the Foundation began its mission of research, education and community outreach, and as one researcher describes it; “was the candle that ignited the flame” in bringing prevention to the forefront on the war on cancer.

The Foundation firmly believed then, as it does now, that an emphasis on prevention, not just treatment, could help reduce cancer deaths and incidence rates. In 1985 when the Foundation began, the focus of cancer was on the cure. Today, prevention has been elevated in the public mind and cancer deaths have declined and many experts crediting wider screening efforts for major cancers, such as colon, prostate and breast.

Since its inception, the Foundation has provided more than $113 million to support cancer research, education and community outreach programs nationwide. Through its research grants and fellowship programs, the Foundation has been pivotal in developing a body of knowledge that is the basis for important prevention and early detection strategies.

The Foundation encourages individuals to own their own health and take steps to reduce their cancer risk. Simple lifestyle changes such as; healthy eating, exercise, and following cancer screening guidelines can affect your risk for cancer.  Each day, take a Step Away from Cancer.
